Mapping Life Through Art and Photography

Professionally known as blucamino, art and photography are more than creative outlets—they are tools for self-discovery and expression. An introverted young creative from Crystal Park, Benoni, Blu has used visuals to articulate emotions and ideas that words often fail to capture. “I use art to navigate through life and reach a certain destination of self-discovery,” he explains.

His journey into photography began at the age of 11, inspired by a video editing app his brother introduced him to. What started as a hobby quickly evolved into a passion as he experimented with video editing, graphic design, and eventually photography. By grade 8, Blu was immersing himself in Adobe Lightroom tutorials, learning to shoot and edit with his phone until he got his first camera in grade 12—a Nikon D3100, still his trusted tool today.

Photography became truly transformative after a personal tragedy. “When a tragedy happened, everything felt like it was falling apart. Photography was the only way I could cope,” he shares. That moment cemented his desire to pursue the craft as a career, and he has been building his creative identity ever since.

Blu’s photography series, Chapters, is a reflection of this journey. Each image represents a different stage in his life, a “chapter” in the ongoing story of his growth as an artist. “Every photograph is a creative documentary of myself,” he explains. “I am telling my story in real time as I grow.” For him, the most crucial element in any image is emotion: the feeling it evokes in both the subject and the viewer.

Today, Blu describes himself as an introverted creative misfit who uses art as a map for life. He hopes his work inspires others to embrace their uniqueness and find their voice through creativity. With every chapter he documents, he aims to leave a blueprint for other young creatives: it’s okay to be different, it’s okay to be imperfect, and above all, it’s important to create.
