Luyanda Mbatha’s journey from the rural area of eCwaka in KwaZulu-Natal to the world of modeling and acting is one defined by passion, resilience, and the pursuit of creative expression. Raised by her mother, Duduzile Luswazi, alongside her siblings Ntethelelo and Uthandile, Luyanda learned the value of hard work and persistence from an early age. Although her surroundings were humble, her dreams were anything but that.

Her love for fashion and modeling began in high school, where she would spend her free time experimenting with outfits and posing for photos with her younger sister. What started as a pastime quickly turned into a passion. Despite the limitations of living in a rural area, Luyanda found creative ways to bring her visions to life. This natural inclination toward self-expression eventually led her to pursue modeling more seriously. Her fashion style is a unique blend of old-school Black American influences and her own modern twist. She favors neutral tones like black and brown and feels most confident in baggy jeans paired with crop tops or oversized T-shirts. Fashion, for her, is deeply connected to mood—a form of self-expression that changes with how she feels on a given day.
Breaking into the modeling industry, however, was not without its challenges. For three years, Luyanda struggled to find an agency willing to represent her due to height standards that often excluded models under a certain height. Yet, she remained undeterred. After countless rejections, she finally signed with an agency—a major victory in her journey. “That was a breakthrough moment for me,” she shares. “After so much rejection, getting signed was proof that persistence pays off .”

Luyanda is not just a model but a storyteller at heart. Her love for storytelling led her to study Drama and Production at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), where she continues to sharpen her skills. Being on stage and in front of the camera has helped her grow in ways she never expected. Through her drama studies, she learned how to push past shyness and embrace the vulnerability that comes with performing. One of her most memorable experiences was participating in Abaminza, a student-led production that challenged her creatively and brought her closer to her peers.
Balancing her studies with her modeling career is no easy feat, but Luyanda is determined to make it work. Shoots often take place on weekends, and catching up on missed classes requires dedication and extra hours of studying. Yet she approaches both aspects of her life with the same energy and passion, seeing them as complementary rather than separate.

Looking ahead, Luyanda envisions a future where she collaborates with major fashion brands across Africa and internationally. She dreams of walking in New York Fashion Week and hopes to make her mark on the big screen, particularly in South African and global film productions.
Her ambitions extend beyond modeling and acting—she wants to launch her own clothing line and open businesses in her hometown to create opportunities for young people. “There’s a verse in the Bible that says, ‘When the time is right, I, the Lord, will make it happen,’” she says. “That keeps me grounded and reminds me that I’m on my own path. There’s no competition when you trust the timing of your journey.” As Luyanda’s star continues to rise, she remains focused on her dreams and determined to inspire others to embrace their own paths.
