Nonkululeko Mbatha: The Storyteller Behind “The Black Door” & “Isitha: The Enemy”

Nonkululeko Mbatha is a rising South African actress, best known for her gripping portrayal of Thenjiwe in The Black Door, now rebranded as Isitha: The Enemy on e.tv. Raised in Newlands East, KwaMashu, she was primarily brought up by her grandmother, with whom she shares a special bond, often referring to herself as “her grandma’s child.” This upbringing has been a significant influence in shaping her grounded and passionate approach to both life and her craft.

From a young age, Nonkululeko was captivated by storytelling. She recalls watching TV shows and reenacting scenes, fascinated by the art of acting and the opportunity to embody diverse characters. This passion led her to pursue acting professionally, determined to bring various narratives to life.

Her path to acting wasn’t without its challenges. After completing her studies, Nonkululeko faced the difficulty of juggling work and auditions, as she knew that the fulfillment she found in acting made the struggles worthwhile. Over time, she was able to hone her craft and eventually secured her breakthrough role as Thenjiwe in The Black Door.

In the role of Thenjiwe, Nonkululeko portrays a character with a complex backstory—Thenjiwe is a young woman who survived sexual assault and now faces life with resilience and vulnerability. The storyline reflects the harsh realities of gender-based violence in South Africa, a theme Nonkululeko is passionate about. “Telling Thenji’s story is important because it highlights the reality many women face,” she shares. “It is my hope that this character sparks conversations about healing and hope.”

One particularly emotional storyline involved Thenjiwe’s partner’s children being taken away, a moment that impacted Nonkululeko deeply. While she separates herself from her character, moments like these bring her face-to-face with real-life struggles that many families endure. “As a storyteller, you step into a character’s world and leave your own life behind. But it makes you reflect on the pain others experience.”

Nonkululeko’s journey continues in Isitha: The Enemy, the spin-off of The Black Door, where Thenjiwe’s story evolves. While The Black Door delved into adult themes surrounding a brothel and its hidden stories, Isitha focuses on new beginnings, second chances, and the pursuit of healing.

Beyond acting, Nonkululeko has her sights set on expanding her creative talents. She aims to grow not only as a performer but also as a scriptwriter. “I want to continue growing and exploring new ways to tell stories. I’m always looking for opportunities to push myself further,” she says. Additionally, she plans to return to theatre, balancing her work on screen with stage performances.

Despite her growing fame, Nonkululeko remains humble and grounded. She understands that there are often unrealistic expectations placed on public figures. “Being on screen doesn’t mean you’ve made it in every area of life. We’re all still figuring things out,” she says. For those following in her footsteps, she offers simple but profound advice: “Stay in your own lane. Run your own race. Everything has its time.”

And as for her personal motto? “I can still win this. It’s not over until I’m six feet under.”
