Luxury isn’t always about excess. Sometimes it’s about restraint, intention, and the confidence to let strong creative direction speak for itself.
For visual director Kopeledi, those ideas came together in the debut campaign for MELLZ Luxe, a new South African luxury fragrance brand built around the philosophy, “Less effort. More luxe.” Tasked with shaping the brand’s first visual identity, Kopeledi transformed an abstract concept into an editorial campaign that feels both timeless and contemporary.
Having started in front of the camera as a model, Kopeledi discovered that his creative instincts extended far beyond posing for the lens. Working with fashion brands and creative collaborators eventually led him to visual direction, where he found the freedom to build entire worlds rather than simply exist within them.

“As a visual director, my role is to translate ideas, moods and concepts into a visual language that tells a compelling story while staying true to a brand’s identity”
That approach became the foundation of the MELLZ Luxe campaign. Founded by Luyanda Masuku, the fragrance brand embraces a hyper-feminine identity, blending softness with sophistication. Rather than relying on colourful visuals often associated with beauty campaigns, Kopeledi chose a striking black-and-white aesthetic inspired by editorial fashion photography.

For him, monochrome wasn’t simply a stylistic choice, it was a statement. High-contrast imagery strips away distractions, allowing texture, form and composition to take center stage while giving the campaign a refined, gallery-like quality. The result positions the fragrance bottle almost as a sculptural object, reinforcing the brand’s luxurious ambitions from its very first release.
Kopeledi hopes to contribute to a broader shift within South Africa’s creative landscape. Instead of local brands being celebrated simply because they’re homegrown, he believes they should earn recognition through bold concepts, exceptional execution and world-class craftsmanship.
His vision is one where South African creatives don’t chase international trends but help define them.
Kopeledi has introduced a visual language that proves thoughtful creative direction can transform a brand’s first impression into something memorable, showing that luxury is often found in the details we choose to leave behind.
