SMTKS. STUDIOS Is Turning South African Culture Into Wearable Stories

For SMTKS. STUDIOS, behind every design is a story, a memory, and a piece of South African culture waiting to be preserved. Pronounced Somatekisi Studios, the creative platform was founded with a simple but meaningful mission: to celebrate the people, places, and everyday experiences that shape South African identity. From apparel and accessories to visual storytelling and creative projects, the studio sees every piece as an opportunity to start a conversation.

What began with a tribute to the country’s taxi industry has since evolved into a broader exploration of culture, history, and community.

“The pieces we create come from stories that connect deeply with African communities”

One of SMTKS. STUDIOS’ earliest concepts centered around the iconic Toyota HiAce, affectionately known by many as the Super 16 or Zola Bud. More than just a mode of transport, the minibus represents a shared South African experience, carrying generations of commuters, dream chasers, workers, and families through their daily lives.

For the studio, celebrating taxi culture is about looking beyond outdated stereotypes and recognising a community rich with creativity. From customised taxis and distinctive fashion to music and everyday rituals, the industry has cultivated a vibrant culture that deserves to be documented rather than overlooked.

That same philosophy continues through collections like the Iconic 5 series, which honours influential African musicians, free thinkers, and cultural figures whose contributions continue to shape society.

As SMTKS. STUDIOS grows, its ambitions extend far beyond apparel. The vision is to become a creative house where clothing, visual presentations, and events work together to preserve stories that might otherwise be forgotten. Rather than following trends, the studio hopes to create timeless pieces that can be worn with pride, passed down through generations, and continue sparking conversations for years to come.

In celebrating the ordinary moments that define South African life, SMTKS. STUDIOS reminds us that culture isn’t only found in history books. Sometimes it’s found in the taxi ride to work, the stories we share, and the memories we choose to carry with us.
