For K.nat, Ibhanoyi is more than a new release. The 3-Step and Afro-Pop vocalist, songwriter and producer sees the song as an anthem for anyone working towards a better life, while marking an important new chapter in his own journey.
Produced last December before signing with Unified Entertainment, Ibhanoyi is K.nat’s official debut single under the label, although it is not his first song. The release draws from the sonic energy of artists such as Funky Qla, Dlala Thukzin and Zee Nxumalo, whose approach has influenced the direction of his developing sound.
“Ibhanoyi” translates to “airplane”, and the image sits at the heart of the song. For K.nat, getting on a plane represents more than travel. It reflects the desire to rise beyond where you started, change your family’s circumstances and experience a life that once felt out of reach.
“It represents moving from just surviving to truly experiencing the beauty of the world with the people who supported you through the struggle.”
That sense of ambition also comes from a deeply personal place. K.nat describes the idea as a reflection of a dream many people share: succeeding one day, boarding a flight and travelling the world with the people they love.
The track features Moodriser, whose voice K.nat felt brought the emotion the record needed. Inspired by her tone and vocal ability, he was excited to have her contribute to the song, with the collaboration coming together through his management.
His journey has not always been straightforward. Coming from Nquthu and developing his music before signing with Unified Entertainment, K.nat says joining the label brought a noticeable shift in the quality and direction of his work.
Now, with Ibhanoyi already opening new doors and receiving a warm response from listeners, K.nat is looking ahead. With a number of unreleased tracks already waiting, the next chapter may be difficult to choose but it is clear that Ibhanoyi is only the beginning.
